Derbyshire Fall Short in Derby Defeat

The home side were 58-1 after the powerplay with some lusty blows perfected by Scottish international, George Munsey (53). Jack Haynes also reached a half-century with Tom Moores adding a further 39, Notts reached a par score of 183-6 following their 20 overs.

Akif Javed finally showed the skills which saw him attract Derbyshire by picking up a Blast best of 2-31, one of those deliveries making a mess of Joe Clarke’s stumps.

Derbyshire were ahead of the 9.2 run rate following the powerplay after six overs, the issue was though that they had lost four wickets. Sadly, the Falcons found themselves getting into good positions with regards to the run chase, however some batsmen played unnecessary shots at a crucial point. Amit Basra and Ross Whiteley got out caught on the boundary when the runs had been scored in the over, both falling from the last ball of the over when up with the run-rate.

Some hard hitting from Nick Potts and Ben Aitchison saw Derbyshire requiring 20 runs from the final over and despite a maximum from Aitchison there were three dot balls and a first double over Notts for 21 years was avoided by the Outlaws.

Yet again we see Derbyshire get themselves into good positions but fail to get over the line. It seems when Mickey Arthur’s men are in control of the game, inevitably they go on to win. However, in tight games, such as Durham at home and Essex away, the opposition prevail. It’s fine margins, but that is what T20 cricket is all about.

Derbyshire move onto red ball action now with a tough trip to the North-East to take on Durham starting on Friday (12th June). Can the Falcons cause a shock at one of the pre-season favourites?
