Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bat first on a worn pitch. For the first time this season, the Falcons top-order failed following a tight bowling display from the hosts. Derbyshire had never played a T20 against Essex in Chelmsford before and the only previous meeting between the two sides came on Finals Day in 2019 which Essex won easily.
In a rare failure Nye Donald scored only 20 before chipping a lofted drive caught by wicket keeper Michael Pepper. Martin Andersson, Caleb Jewell & Wayne Madsen fell when the score was on 55 shortly after the powerplay. Ross Whiteley increased the scoring with Montgomery to 75 before the burly left-hander bowled by Simon Harmer.
