Under Arthur’s stewardship, Derbyshire finished third in Division Two of the County Championship and narrowly missed out on promotion to the top tier of the red ball game last year. The former South Africa, Pakistan and Sri Lanka head coach took over at the club ahead of the 2022 campaign.

While performances in 2025’s T20 Vitality Blast and Metro Bank One Day Cup competitions were disappointing overall, the decision shows that there is encouragement with the direction that the club is going in under Arthur’s control.

Speaking to Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s media about the new deal, Arthur stated:

“I’m immensely proud of the progress we have made, it’s not always been easy and we’ve had setbacks, but I truly feel we are putting the foundations in place for sustained success.”

“Our project is moving in the right direction, our players are getting better every single day and we will keep working tirelessly until we are showing those results on the field.”

There is growing excitement regarding Derbyshire’s chances of a successful 2026 season, following the recent signings of England international Shoaib Bashir from Somerset, Pakistan international Mohammad Abbas from Nottinghamshire, the T20 acquisition of Sufiyan Muqeem plus the return of Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar.

Arthur’s new deal also represents further stability at the club in their quest to play in Division One of the County Championship for the first time since 2013. Derbyshire’s 2026 season begins on Friday 3rd April with a County Championship Division Two match at home against Worcestershire at The Central Co-op County Ground in Derby.
