Falcons Women Fall To Defeat In Wales

Derbyshire Falcons Women lost to Glamorgan Women by 92 runs yesterday at Sophia Gardens in the second game of their Women’s Vitality Blast League Two campaign. Despite the defeat, the match will be remembered for an incredible landmark achievement from Rhiannon Knowling-Davies.
The Falcons won the toss and elected to field first in glorious weather conditions in the Welsh capital. Glamorgan Women, who comfortably defeated Gloucestershire Women away from home by 65 runs the previous day, started the match very confidently at the crease and never looked back. Opening batter Daisy Jeanes played magnificently to reach 86 from 54 balls, which included 14 boundaries, before being dismissed during the final over of the hosts’ innings.
Glamorgan finished on 167-8 from their 20 overs. The highlight of Derbyshire’s bowling performance was undoubtedly Knowling-Davies’s superb contribution right at the end. Buoyed by finally securing the dismissal of the superb Jeanes, Knowling-Davies promptly took the immediate wickets of Georgia Parfitt and Charlotte Lambert in successive deliveries to register a wonderful hat-trick and secure overall match figures of 3-25 with the ball.
Unfortunately, the Falcons had no answer to Glamorgan’s bowling attack and were all out for just 75 in their response. Derbyshire’s top scorers with the bat were Jess Couser and Knowling-Davies who both reached 16. Glamorgan’s Katy Cobb impressed with the ball, recording figures of 3-10.
This was always going to be a tough match for Jon Dyson’s side, having to make a long trip to face a strong team only 24 hours after competing at Derby. The Falcons can at least take heart that, Jeanes aside, the bowlers did well to restrict every other batter from making a significant knock. Glamorgan’s second highest scorer was Bethan Ellis with 24 and five of their batters were dismissed for a score of three runs or less.
The Falcons will have learned plenty from this contest and can still be encouraged by a promising start to the 2026 season, in which significant progress has been made since the end of last year’s campaign.
Derbyshire Falcons Women are next in action on Sunday 31st May when they take on Worcestershire Rapids Women at Visit Worcestershire New Road, where Jon Dyson’s side will aim to record their second victory from their opening three games in League Two of the Women’s Vitality Blast.
