Derbyshire Second XI Defeated By Red Rose County

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first. Derbyshire were all out for 291 as Lancashire’s Ollie Sutton starred with bowling figures of 5-59. Opening batter Mitch Wagstaff top scored for Derbyshire with a knock of 82 while Ajay Khunti also impressed with a score of 62 while batting at number five.

In response, the hosts amassed a total of 456 from their first innings to secure a healthy lead of 165 at the midway stage of the contest. This was thanks in main to an outstanding century from England international Tom Hartley; the left-hander scored 122 from just 120 deliveries before retiring not out. Hartley was supported well by Ben Walkden’s score of 90. The pick of Derbyshire’s bowling attack was Chinmay Mullapudi who claimed figures of 3-51.

The visitors then set the hosts a modest target of 145 to win the match after being dismissed all out for 309 in their second innings. Derbyshire showed some impressive resilience down the batting order as Niall McHale hit 65 while teenager Joseph Hall recorded an unbeaten 50. For Lancashire, Walkden also impressed with the ball, taking figures of 4-39.

Ultimately, the hosts chased down their target with ease to seal a comfortable victory, thanks largely to a half century from opening batter Rian Maisuria. For Derbyshire, Khunti secured figures of 2-24 from his six overs.

The second team are next in action on Wednesday at Donald Hawley Way in Duffield against Leicestershire Foxes in the North Group of the Second XI T20 Cup.
