In many ways, this was an even better performance than the one that crushed Northamptonshire a week before at The Central Co-op County Ground. Chiefly, because Derbyshire found themselves in a similar scenario to the one away at Lancashire back in April. The manner of that defeat to the red rose county clearly affected Derbyshire in their following couple of games, almost like a hangover. At that point, after a painful 225 run defeat away to an out-of-form Kent, it looked for many that the club’s promotion hopes had already been extinguished. Fast forward to May 18, and the push for promotion is well and truly back on after Derbyshire banished the ghosts of Emirates Old Trafford and swept aside Middlesex at the home of cricket.
Middlesex began the final day leading by 79 runs but with only two wickets remaining. As the opening session progressed, the hosts crept up to 316-8 as the ninth wicket partnership reached 50. The nerves may have been jangling at the prospect of another situation where a victory would escape Mickey Arthur’s side when in a sublime position. However, Nick Potts (who was only drafted in at very short notice to replace an injured Zak Chappell) stepped up to take the match by the scruff of the neck and contributed hugely to Derbyshire’s victory at a critical moment in the contest.
Firstly, Potts dismissed Toby Roland-Jones for 28 as he edged the ball into the gloves of wicketkeeper Brooke Guest. Shortly afterwards, Potts then trapped Naavya Sharma leg before wicket in the same over to have Middlesex all out for 320 in their second innings. This left Derbyshire needing only a score of 122 to win their second consecutive match.
At lunch, the visitors were on 37-1 and progressing nicely despite losing the wicket of Luis Reece. This was when a final stumbling block emerged. Rain. Suddenly the heavens opened with Derbyshire requiring only a further 85 runs with nine wickets in hand to secure a tremendous victory.
