Captain Fantastic, but for how long?

Wayne Madsen will lead Derbyshire for a second season in the County Championship, his sixth overall in two spells as leader on the field. The 42-year-old has just returned from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, where he led Italy.

Sadly, his campaign lasted only four overs on the field, when Madsen dislocated his shoulder in the Italians opening group stage match against Scotland. There was talk of him playing in the latter stages of the group games, but reality kicked in and Madsen was forced to watch.

Madsen expects to be fully fit in time to lead the Falcons on opening day and try to build on the success of last season in the County Championship Division Two. Derbyshire were left ruing their opportunities as they fell short on promotion by finishing third in the table, five points behind Glamorgan, who were promoted for the first time in 21 years.

Madsen excelled with the bat in the County Championship again in 2025 hitting 1158 runs, only Ben Compton (Kent ) and Saif Zaib (Northamptonshire) hit more as the Durban-born opener hit over 1000 runs in his first-class career for the third time in four seasons and eighth overall.

So, if Madsen isn’t fit to start the 2026 season, who will lead the Falcons out at the County Ground on Friday 3rd April?
