With the visitors 167-6 on day one, they were held up by a brilliant hundred from Miles Hammond and some lusty blows from the ninth partnership of 191 between Henry Brookes and Will Williams. They laid the foundations for Gloucestershire’s surprising high total and first victory of the season.
Derbyshire head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, clearly felt the partnership at the end of the visitors’ first innings was where the game was lost: “That’s where the game got away from us. I thought we bowled well in the first 80 overs, I still can’t fathom out, in what world, number nine and ten can put on a partnership of 190”, he lamented to BBC Radio Derby’s Dave Fletcher.
