There's a certain irony that, in an English cricket season which has seen so much dry and sunny weather, it's buckets of rain that could prove to be the final nail in the coffin towards Derbyshire's promotion hopes this year.
After losing at home to Durham in their most recent match by 338 runs, the heaviest defeat in terms of runs in Derbyshire's entire history, Mickey Arthur's side will have been desperate to have got on the field today at The OurCoop County Ground to make instant amends. The skies above had other ideas though.
With the opening day's play lost completely, the primary worry now is that the match against Middlesex will end as a draw, even if Derbyshire perform strongly once the weather clears up. At this stage of the campaign, only wins will do for Derbyshire. The East Midlands side occupy sixth position in Division Two and sit 37 points behind second-placed Kent. Once the Middlesex match has concluded, only four matches will remain.
