Chasing a target of 138 thanks to some superb bowling from Ben Aitchison in the morning of the last day, Harry Came’s side failed to handle the pressure, succumbing to defeat after being bowled out for 108 and losing the game by 29 runs.

Derbyshire needed to take four wickets in the morning to set up a small run chase in the context of the first innings. Aitchison picked up the wickets of Paul Coughlin, Tom Bailey and the dangerous Australian batter, Marcus Harris, who top-scored again following his hundred in the first innings.

Derbyshire had played well over the course of the three and a bit days to set up an unlikely win, given that their last victory in the County Championship at Old Trafford came in 1996. Some fine batting from stand-in skipper, Harry Came and wicket-keeper Brooke Guest had seen their side overlap Lancashire’s first innings total and there were some useful knocks from Matthew Montgomery and Martin Andersson again, following on from his double-hundred last week.

Shoab Bashir showed what Falcons fans can expect, with four wickets in Lancashire’s first innings, while the quick bowlers, apart from Muhammed Abbas shared the wicket in the second knock.
