There was, perhaps, a sense of initial disappointment after Derbyshire’s opening match of the 2026 campaign at home against Worcestershire. After dominating much of a largely uninterrupted contest, Mickey Arthur’s side fell agonisingly short of securing a victory. Derbyshire needed to collect nine wickets on the final day, but could only manage six, despite Muhammad Abbas’ success with the very first delivery of the fourth day. It was a reminder that The Central Co-op County Ground remains one of the toughest stadiums in England to secure 20 wickets from.
As discussed in our most recent article, there were certainly plenty of positives to take though from Derbyshire’s first match of the new campaign. After all, only one side managed to win their match in the opening round of fixtures of the new County Championship Division Two season. Derbyshire sit in second position in the table after collecting a pleasing 16 points. Mickey Arthur’s side must now take those positives into their next match; an away trip to Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford in the red ball format.
Intriguingly, Lancashire came even closer to registering an opening match victory than Derbyshire. With just under 16 full overs remaining of the final day away at Northamptonshire, the red rose county required just one more wicket to claim an excellent win, with their opponents nowhere near close enough to reaching their target of 321. Remarkably though, the hosts clung on to draw the game thanks to an unbeaten 95 from number eight batter George Bartlett after facing 197 balls. At one stage in their second innings, Northamptonshire were 50-6 and staring defeat in the face.
Ahead of Derbyshire’s away trip to Lancashire, it will be fascinating to see how the red rose county responds to the manner of that opening match draw. The 2025 red ball season was a strange one for Lancashire; it took them until the ninth match of the competition for them to finally record their first County Championship Division Two victory. Incidentally, this came against Derbyshire, but on the road rather than at home at Emirates Old Trafford. By that stage, any hopes of promotion to Division One had already faded away. They certainly can’t afford to wait that long again in 2026 to get off the mark. That said, if Derbyshire are to fulfil their ambitions of winning promotion this season, it’s important that they notch a win as early as possible too, to give themselves a strong platform to build on and to lay down a marker to the other seven teams in the division. For a match so early on in the schedule, there’s a lot riding on this.
