There is something about the tree-lined venue which brings visitors to Queen’s Park in Chesterfield for the cricket. Ever since 1898, Derbyshire County Cricket Club have been entertaining local folk at this beautiful venue, (I’m biased, I was born and raised here) and thousands flock to the ground these days for their annual festival of cricket.
Derbyshire supporters over the years have seen visiting internationals and household names from WG Grace in 1904 to Sir James Anderson this very week. Many journalists make the special trip north to witness the action in the ground which is a stones throw from the town centre. Journalist Michael Henderson, who wrote the life-enriching book, That Will Be England Gone: The Last Summer of Cricket about halcyon days of cricket watching as a youngster to the hurley burley nonsense of the Hundred.
