The announcement of the new network was made to coincide with International Women’s Day on March 8. There is no question that the women’s game is growing quickly, and the recent launch from the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation reflects the need to build on this and ensure that further support is being provided for the trajectory of the women’s game to keep rising upwards.
To find out more details about this new initiative, Lauren Tuffrey spoke to The Peakite to explain the network’s aims and objectives. Lauren, along with Emma Thatcher, is one of the Women’s and Girls’ Development Officers for the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation.
Lauren explained how the new initiative came about and outlined the main goals of the Derbyshire Women in Cricket Network as follows:
“The idea of this network has come from lots of conversations we’ve had over the last couple of years. In February, we had our women and girls conference. We do that every year, where we bring key people from the cricket network into one room, share best practice, how they can access funding and courses, that sort of thing. We brought it up as an element on that day. They said if we created a network for you, what would you want it to be? What do you want as women within cricket? So the idea came from that. I’ve been working behind the scenes with a few members of the team, trying to work out what we were going to offer. So we were really pleased to be able to launch this on International Women’s Day. It’s basically aimed at empowering all women involved in cricket across Derbyshire, to join a network where they can feel supported, they can develop as volunteers, they can find a pathway into leadership, they can access courses and keynote speakers. We’re keeping it wide and open so that anyone can sign up and get whatever it is they feel like they need from this network.”
